Consumer Consciousness

Consumer Consciousness is dominant in the marketplace of goods and services. But, the definition goes way beyond shopping and buying stuff. Consumer Consciousness affects how a person sees him/herself, sees the world, and interacts with everyone and everything. Indeed, we propose that Consumer Consciousness is what interferes with understanding WHO AM I and, therefore, prevents us from effectively addressing personal and interpersonal problems and limits our imagination in dealing with many societal, economic, political, and ecological issues we face in these United States of America and in the world.

Producer Consciousness

To live according to nature and our biological, neurological, and spiritual design to be Producers, the words consumer and consumerism must be eliminated and the mindset of Consumer Consciousness must be abolished.  Consumer Consciousness interferes with our natural productive capabilities for effective decision making, good problem solving, and personal and interpersonal flourishing.  It’s like a virus infecting the brain in the same way that a flu virus infects the body or a software virus infects a computer system.  It’s a virus that takes the brain out of sync from the natural productive capabilities.  And like the body’s production processes to fight off a flu virus is accompanied by physical pain and discomfort, the brain’s natural production processes to fight the invasion of the Consumer Consciousness virus is accompanied by stress, anxiety, fear, tension, frustration, boredom, and overall (dis)ease.

We must stop operating in life with the false Consumer Consciousness that’s infecting, damaging, and taking our brain out of sync from its natural productive capabilities.  We must begin thinking, talking, and interacting with each other using a consciousness (mindset) that is totally compatible with the reality that we are Producers.  That compatible mindset is Producer Consciousness!

The billion-dollar self-help industry indicates that people are deeply engaged in seeking answers to the WHO AM I question.  Over the years of exploring WHO AM I, Linette and I have read many religious, spiritual, psychology, and philosophy books and magazines designed to help people understand themselves, improve their personal wellbeing, and contribute to the wellbeing of others and the world.  We have listened to many podcasts and been to a number of self-help workshops, seminars, and retreats.  As a result we determined that consumer consciousness and it’s language of commodification and transaction interferes with carrying out and sustaining the ideas, concepts, and methods of self-help. We created Producer Consciousness and producer language to overcome the damage that consumer consciousness does achieving personal and collective wellbeing. The books, articles, and podcast provided in this website will help in your transition from the lie that we are consumers to the truth that we are Producers.

A major feature of Producer Consciousness is its application to any discipline (especially, the social sciences).  We argue that governmental and non-governmental institutions are operating under consumer consciousness and can be more effective operating under Producer Consciousness.  We’ve done most of our work applying Producer Consciousness to education (K-12 and higher ed).  Our book “Producer Consciousness: A New Mindset for Education” details the application to the K-12 classroom.

Benefits of Producer Consciousness

The vast majority of public school teachers are not licensed psychologists.  Yet, everyday teachers are expected to navigate the economic, social, and psychological issues students bring to the classroom.  This can overwhelm and contribute to “burnout.”  Producer Consciousness promotes emotional intelligence to avoid “burnout.”  Also, Producer Consciousness gives teachers a consistent language to deal with all issues students bring to the classroom.  Being able to use a consistent language to talk to all students is another tool of emotional intelligence that helps reduce “burnout.”

Continuing Education for Teachers

Producer Consciousness language and ideas supplement and not interfere with a teacher’s normal lesson planning.

Support for Communities

Students often have difficulty articulating feelings, actions, reactions, and thoughts.  Teachers, counselors, mentors, and even parents cannot be with a student 24/7 to help the student understand his/her of feelings, actions, reactions, and thoughts.  Producer Consciousness is a natural way for a student to understand and communicate his/her feelings, actions, reactions, and thoughts.

“This book does not give handy tips on how to be better or wealthier or healthier, nor does it lay out a ready-made framework for understanding the world and how to live in it.  What this book does do is place in your hands some powerful tools for constructing your own way of understanding, and for using that understanding productively.  "Self-help" books are part of our passive consumer culture: buy this book and it will make you better, along the same lines as buy this car and it will make you respected, buy this phone and it will make you hip, drink this brand of vodka and you will be sophisticated, vote for this candidate and your problems will be solved.  This book empowers people to reject the mind-numbing passiveness of the consumer society and recognize their own powers as producers: producers who do not need someone else to tell them what to think or believe or do, but instead rely on their own powers to pursue projects of their own choice.”

Dr. Bruce Waller, PhD

Readers who apply the concepts of Producer Consciousness can expect improvement in all aspects of their lives.  The shift to thinking of oneself as a Producer rather than a consumer is empowering and life-changing.

Dr. Terry Benton. Department of English, Youngstown State University

What business does a theologian have writing a blurb for a book that addresses, among other things, the chokehold that consumerism has on contemporary American culture?  I find the main thrust of Producer Consciousness to be a mindset that is applicable to various spheres of human existence.  It can enhance one's relationship with God by facilitating obedience to the Cultural Mandate to have dominion (manage) over all of creation.  If applied, the producer consciousness mindset can also have a positive effect on any profession, including studentship.  Also it is a mindset that can help anyone who applies it to make the most of the talent, skills, training and resources at his/her disposal.  I've referenced the principle of this book in a couple of my sermons already.  Is This book an audacious antidote to the viral consumerism of our day.  Therefore, it is my pleasure to recommend it to all, regardless of your calling in life.

Samuel Olarewaju, Ph.D

For over 10 years I've witnessed young people struggle to reach their full potential due to generations of poverty, and growing up in disproportionally under-resourced communities.  In order to break this cycle and achieve desired levels of success or well-being, we must first change our consciousness.  I believe that Producer Consciousness will not only change the outcomes for today's youth, but the advancement of our society as a whole.

A thought provoking reader-friendly, enlightening book that deemphasizes traditional patterns of consumerism, enkindles change and transformation.  We were created to be Producers and live under Producer Consciousness.
